Salzburg’s Saalachtal valley has around 80 km of cross country skiing routes for all those looking to push themselves, while enjoying the scenery.
Count off your laps down in the valley, on the high-level cross country trails up on the Loferer Alm – where snow can be guaranteed, or in Heutal / Winkelmoosalm. If that’s still not enough, there’s also an illuminated cross country trail in St. Martin.

Winter trekking in the Salzburg mountains
Pechtlgut is also a great place to start a winter trek. Wander around in the deep pristine snow in boots or snow shoes. Enjoy the exercise of a hike in the magnificent countryside along some of the 100 kilometres of cleaned, cleared and cultivated winter hiking paths.

Sledging in Lofer
After a wonderful afternoon or evening in a mountain lodge with friends, family or your partner, there’s nothing like a sledge ride back down into the village, in the daytime or under the stars, whether it’s a pleasurable glide or an all-action race. For couples there’s the romantic walk up to Maria Kirchental to see the fascinating baroque pilgrimage church. Guests with sporty ambitions will enjoy the hour’s march up to the Hochalm and the neighbouring Heutal valley. The cosy mountain hut restaurant at the top offers plenty of down-to-earth traditional cooking.
When there’s plenty of snow around we recommend a ride up with the gondola cable cars followed by the 7-km sledge ride back down from the Loferer Alm. For those who prefer to travel in style, wrapped up in cosy blankets, there’s even the chance to enjoy a horse-drawn sleigh ride.
